Award-winning British jazz ace Shabaka Hutchings is curating OneFest 2019, and is inviting grassroots artists to apply to play.

OneFest is set to return in September across two venues and cities – EartH in London and the Sheffield Leadmill.

Curated by Hutchings (Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming), it aims to highlight the obstacles faced by emerging talent, with particular focus on the North/South divide.

Hutchings is inviting artists to apply to showcase at the festival and will handpick five applicants to play across both sites.

Aside from the live performance opportunities, winners will take part in educational panels and workshops lead by music industry leaders.

These sessions include Bridging the Gap, the North South Divide, a workshop and Q+A with Hutchings, plus Let’s Keep the Conversation Going, a further look at mental health support.

Speakers include John McClure (Reverend and the Makers), Shlomo, Thomas Haywood (The Blinders) and Skinny Pelembe.

Hutchings said: ‘It’s an honour to be asked to curate OneFest 2019 and continue to support and encourage the work the festival does for new and emerging talent.

‘It’s given me an opportunity to bring different generations of musicians together ... educating and expanding minds... Apply to Play works on breaking those unnecessary North/South boundaries that have evolved within the music industry.’

Applicants can apply from today (26 July) until 6 August through the OneFest website - http://onefestuk.com/.
