We first introduced Luke Sital-Singh to you back in 2012, just before he played at June's Almost Famous showcase. Luke has come a long way since then, and has been funded by British Music Abroad to go and play at SXSW.
Along with 20 other British acts, Luke was selected by British Music Abroad (of which PRS for Music Foundation is a partner) to represent a taste a of British music at SXSW. Luke's music is largely acoustic and somber, with guitar chords and vocals reminiscent of Bon Iver, although its distinctly British (see Fail for You) - naturally a perfect export for SXSW.
We caught up with him to find out what he was most looking forward to about his trip to Texas.
What are you looking forward to most about SXSW?
I've been told the whole thing is a crazy week of musical chaos, which sounds exciting and pretty terrifying all the same time. I'm just quite eager to jump in, guns blazing and see what happens.
Do you approach showcase gigs like SXSW differently to regular live sets?
I try my best not to differentiate between them too much. It's not easy to forget who may or may not be in the audience. But I just need to do my thing and forget about all that stuff for 30 mins.
What do you hope to get out of going this year?
It's my first real introduction to America, which hopefully will be a great place for me to play many more shows and tours in the future. So just hoping they like me and don't throw me out of the country right away.
How important was the British Music Abroad funding to your trip?
The funding was essential. There is little chance I could have afforded the trip without it, and as it's such a key festival to play at the funding is a potential career maker. So it's utterly amazing that you guys offer it!
If you could perform with anyone onstage at SXSW, who would it be?
Probably Sigur Ros. No idea what I'd add to their music but to be part of it would be amazing.
What gigs are you looking forward to catching at SXSW this year?
I have a few friends who are playing this year. The Staves, Fossil Collective and Kodaline are all bands I've opened for so I'll definitely try and catch their respective shows.
Where can we see you performing back in the UK?
I've just announced a headline tour of the UK in April. Details can be found on my website www.lukesitalsingh.com
