Brighton's Cave Painting went through a tumultuous reinvention to get where they are. But they are definitely sure of their sound and direction now, as reflected in their confident brand of shoegazey, Afro-pop inspired indie rock. Perhaps that is why they are tipped to be a hit at this year's SXSW.

The band released their album Votive Life in 2012, which was well received by media and fans alike, with second single So Calm getting plenty of air play. As one of the 21 acts supported to travel to Texas by British Music Abroad and PRS for Music Foundation, Cave Painting will be playing at this year's SXSW, showcasing some of the best music Britain has to offer to an American audience.

Before they departed for sunny Texas, we caught up with Adam Kane (vocals) and Harry Smallwood (guitar) find out how they were feeling about playing at SXSW.

What are you looking forward to most about SXSW?
Plane food. And playing our first shows in America......Yee-Ha!

Do you approach showcase gigs like SXSW differently to regular live sets?
Not massively, although the set may be shorter.

What do you hope to get out of going this year?
We're hoping we can build our profile in the States (and elsewhere), as we'd love to tour abroad more. And a cowboy hat.

How important was the British Music Abroad funding to your trip?
Massively important! In simple terms we wouldn't be making the trip otherwise, it's an amazing privilege, thanks! Plus it's great to see so many other acts we like being funded, so thank you again.

If you could perform with anyone onstage at SXSW, who would it be?
Flaming Lips looks like it would be a whole lot of fun.

What gigs are you looking forward to catching at SXSW this year?
There's an awful lot, but standouts are: Kendrick Lamar, Solange, our good friends alt-J, Cayucas and Alpine - and naturally Andrew WK.

Where can we see you performing back in the UK?
We are playing at the pretty amazing Dalston Roof Garden on 10 May.
