Who? Eighteen-year-old Alex O’Connor is Rex Orange County.

What? Confessional pop.

From where? Deepest, darkest Surrey.

What’s the story? Although still in his teens, Alex has already proven his prodigious talents through an active Soundcloud account and quirky debut singles Uno and Best Friend.

On both tracks, he paints the trials of teenage life, lingering on the insignificant and unnoticed like a natural storyteller.

Add to that his roomy DIY sound, which slips between raw emotional wallop and perky brass-led choruses, and you’ve got a potent songwriting recipe all boxed up for success.

With backing from DJ and Bestival co-founder Rob da Bank, plus links to Tyler, the Creator and Badbadnotgood, he’s fast becoming one of Britain’s most essential new musical voices.

No gadgets or gizmos, just bittersweet alt-pop.

Sounds like? Somewhere in between Vampire Weekend, King Krule and Ed Sheeran. You’re in safe hands with this one...

Predicted to? Contend with a massive A&R scrum over the coming weeks.

Must hear? Latest track Best Friend

Rex Orange County plays Peckham Liberal Arts Club, London, on 11 May.
