Who? The Magic Gang are Angus Taylor, Jack Kaye, Kristian Smith and Paeris Giles.
What? Beaming indie-pop or, in their own words, 'music for your mind / body / spirit / soul'.
From where? Brighton, by way of the New Forest.
What’s the story? The Magic Gang are four close-knit melody makers who've been grafting hard since first hooking up at Brighton music school BIMM about three years ago.
In the early days, their persistent pep and love of soaring harmonies saw them hit the road with everyone from Wolf Alice and Swim Deep to Aussie indie queen Courtney Barnett.
Recording time soon followed, with the boys decamping to Tuff Gong studios in Jamaica to work with rhythm section legends Sly & Robbie, courtesy of Converse Rubber Tracks.
In 2015 they also hooked up with production wiz Dreamtrak (Foals, Swim Deep) for their debut self-titled EP, which was a swoon-fest of soaring alt-pop and pogoing indie.
With their creative juggernaut in full motion they wooed Sarah Liversedge’s BDi independent publishing house last year, and also won over major label Warner UK.
Now well on their way to conjuring some sonic sorcery on a far bigger scale, 2017 is all about initiating the rest of the world into their tingly alt-pop sect.
Their first statement of intent is the cracking single How Can I Compete, released earlier this month and instantly picked up as MistaJam’s Hottest Record in the World on BBC Radio 1.
As a tasty precursor to their next EP, released in March, it's well worth checking out...
Sounds like? File next to Swim Deep, Everything Everything and Happyness.
Predicted to? Become the soundtrack to student unions up and down the country after their jaunt on the road with Circa Waves next month and their own headline spring tour (dates below).
Must hear? The massive How Can I Compete –
