What’s the story? Frost channels the motorik drive and homespun electronics of Johanna and Steve’s main musical projects, but wraps it all in a cosy bilingual pop blanket.
Bonding over a love of eighties Casio keyboards and xylophone solos, theirs is a sound combining dreamy ambient layers with meaty beats and lush synths.
With musical touchpoints including James Holden, Gazelle Twin, Colin Stetson and Juana Molina, they’re ensconced in an abstract soundworld somewhere between Broadcast and Silver Apples.
They’ve only been releasing music together since last year, with their latest Record Still Spinning, which landed last Friday, carrying the biggest wallop yet.
The track has just been championed by BBC Radio 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne, while previous EP Keratin picked up plays from BBC DJs Annie Mac, Nemone and Gideon Coe.
On 28 September, Frost are dropping their debut LP Matters via Lost Room Records – promising an expansive slice of hypnagogic pop to set you right for autumn.
