21 year old Scottish singer songwriter Danny Shah decided to bypass major record companies, setting up his own label and from his bedroom, made a hugely clever pop video for his song We Are Connected, featuring Rihanna, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber that, in its first few days on YouTube had the likes of Chris Moyles, Lauren Laverne and Andi Peters raving about on Twitter. In it’s first few weeks, it had received over 800,000 views.

Not satisfied, Danny, originally from Easter House, Glasgow, set out performing on the streets of London becoming the first ever singer to busk for YouTube views instead of money with the aim of getting his views for the video up to one million. Singing over a few days in Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and on the South Bank with a huge sign announcing his video URL and his target of a million hits, crowds flocked to hear him, some even scanning straight to the video via a QR code that Danny had posted on his sign.

The Youtube hits have been steadily rising, suggesting that YouTube views may be the new currency for young up and coming artists.

To see how Danny got on busking, here’s a short video:
