Who? Boy Azooga are Davey Newington (vocals, guitar), Sam Barnes (bass), Dylan Morgan (keys) and Dafydd Davies (drums).

What? Day-glo indie-rock.

From where? Cardiff.

What’s the story? The riotous sound of Boy Azooga was developed deep in the musical mind of Davey Newington, a maraca-loving, sleighbell-waving multi-instrumentalist with exotic tastes.

Having grown up in a family of musicians – his mum and dad met in the BBC National Orchestra of Wales – and also a graduate of teenage jazz and classical orchestras himself, Davey is well-acquainted with the whole sonic caboodle.

More recently, he’s been drumming with Houdini Dax and Charlotte Church’s Late Night Pop Dungeon, all the while putting together his debut Boy Azooga album, 1, 2 Kung Fu, which landed last Friday via Heavenly Records.

The set distills down all of his favourite bits of Caribou, Tame Impala, Super Furry Animals, William Onyeabor, Ty Segall, Beastie Boys and Black Sabbath, and crams them into 30-odd minutes of ear-melting goodness.

On completing the LP, he recruited pals and members of local bands of Shoebox Orchestra and Afro Cluster to help him play it live. The four-piece have since blown the doors off The Great Escape – a promising forbear for their upcoming live dates (info below).

Sounds like? Your harmonious, melodious and slightly wonky soundtrack for summer.
