Step into the world of Stefan Drechsel, the latest artist to spend 30 seconds with M.  On a bright and sunny day in 2011, he made the decision of his life. Closing the door on his successful career in the corporate world,  he went back to his true passion of song writing, recording and live performance.  His single The Blue Yonder is out now.

How long have you been making music?
Since I was 11 years old. I have been writing songs since the age of 14. I actually wrote my first song when I just learned two chords on my guitar. I always wanted to express something new rather than playing cover songs.

What inspired your latest album/EP/single?
My song The Blue Yonder is mostly inspired by a very atmospheric blue sky that I once saw when having a night walk in London just before sunrise. These are just beautiful and inspiring moments when everything seems to be connected with you.

What process do you go through to make music?
I always improvise on my guitar and piano and some ideas quickly evolve. Lyrics often are just a natural step. I always follow my intuition, also when I record my songs. I don't record on clicks and I don't like the sound to be too processed. I like my music to sound natural and true. When I perform live I just enjoy when people connect to my music and take the whole sound in.

How would you describe your sound?
I believe that my voice and guitar together create an up-lifting harmony of sounds. I play open chords or pickings on my guitar and often I improvise and let the songs flow along with it. And I love singing to my songs a lot. When recording music, I occasionally add piano and electric guitar as background sounds. Some say my music sounds like Leonard Cohen without the monotony, Nick Drake without the shadows and Coldplay without the glamour. However, as complimentary as these comments are, I believe that I just sound like me :)

What would your dream collaboration be?
I am in love with music from West Africa and my dream collaboration would be the Kora player Toumani Diabate. Listening to him playing the the African harp, always puts a smile on my face. There is God's sparkle in his music. My dream would be to improvise with him. I wouldn't ask for more.

When can we catch you live next?
I am currently finalising the release of my debut album Here and Now that will be available in July 2012. This is taking all my attention at the moment and I am currently planning a promotional tour across Great Britain in August/September, and then across European countries later in November/December.
