When BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens named Lincolnshire’s convention-busting rock trio Lines Across Maps as last year’s final ‘Tip Of The Week’, the band braced themselves for an explosive 2012. Wasting no time, they perfected and recorded their long-awaited second EP, On Second Thoughts, ready for release on Monday 25 June. They turned down record label interest to self-produce this profound and exhilarating EP on next to no budget. Vocalist and bassist Bev chats to M for half a minute...

How long have you been making music?
I met Harry and Ryan in first or second year at secondary school, and we've been playing together ever since in various line-ups. It was only about two years ago when the three of us decided to have a real go at this music thing, and we haven't really looked back since! So whilst 'Lines Across Maps' have only existed since 2010, we've been playing together a lot longer than that, and have a highly questionable back catalogue to show for it...

What inspired your latest album/EP?
Going to shows and listening to albums that I really love and thinking "that's what I want to do with my life". I love the thrill of creating something new and not ever quite knowing where a song will take me - for me it's the best bit of being musical.

What process do you go through to create your music?
It tends to start off as a little idea that could strike me anywhere. When I get the chance I'll translate that onto a guitar or bass and then start to construct the song around that. Sometimes the rest of the song will flow really organically, sometimes it might take months to find the right direction to take it - you never really know! Then I'll lay down a demo and show it to the boys, and we'll talk it over and take it from there! Lyrics are something I've really concentrated on for the latest EP. I love how carefully chosen words can add a whole new meaning and dimension to a song.

How would you describe your sound?
Good question… probably something like "forward-thinking rock"...

What would your dream collaboration be?
Whilst I'd love to play with the likes of Oceansize, Biffy, Reuben etc., I think a more exotic pairing would make a more exciting collaboration. Perhaps someone like Lau or the Treacherous Orchestra - I'd love to hear how that crazy folky sound would fuse with ours.

Where can we catch you performing next?
We've just announced two exciting new shows in the South East! - Smashfest in Windsor on 3 August with a whole load of great bands, and Smash London 2 - an incredible night of music (and much, much more) put on by our good friends Dancing Lotus - at Bar Music Hall in London on 16 August the 16th! And there's more in the pipeline! All the details are at www.linesacrossmaps.co.uk.
The band also have some new videos out now, the most recent for Dem Demmy which you can catch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MekYAR4rdKE&feature=plcp
