Singer songwriter Lianne Morgan's career started at a very young age when she made her first stage appearance with a girl group at the age of 12. She was part of the original shortlist for the Spice Girls, but was eventually replaced by Mel C. She's been making music of her own ever since and has been working with producer Greg Haver on her latest material (The Manic Street Preachers, Lost Prophets, Catatonia and Mel C). Her track Wonderful Day has been chosen as Song of the Week by BBC Radio Wales for 23 July.
How long have you been making music?
I have been making music for over 20 years. Writing for various projects, bands and singers, but never had the confidence to make an album and release it as my own.
What inspired your latest album?
My inspiration on the album is the many life events that I have experienced from death, birth, heartache, rejection and discovering my roots. My father’s death was a massive inspiration.
What process do you go through to create your music?
I normally start on the piano, just playing random chords, if I like the sound of the chord I keep it. The chord progression will generally resonate some thought process with me. I will write random words, keywords and also give the chord structure a topic. Then I will record into Cubase and write more lyrics putting it into a song structure, and then if I feel it needs more work I will collaborate with a co-writer. It’s important for the song to grow, so I will go back to it after a few months to listen to it afresh, and make adjustments. When the song has had time to grow I take it into the studio with my producer and musicians and it comes alive.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is a fusion of Pop, Rock with a hint of Country. It’s like Kelly Clarkson meets Pink Floyd and Deep Purple.
What would your dream collaboration be?
It would have to be Burt Bacharach and producer Quincy Jones.
Where can we catch you performing next?
