Yungen is a young rapper from South London with a potentially huge future ahead of him.
He first caught the ears of hip hop and grime fans after featuring a freestyle session on SB.TV. Not only did it win him props from his peers but also saw him recruited by Krept and Konan’s Play Dirty collective.
Since then, his raw talent has only attracted more attention, seeing him link up with a range of stars including Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and Labrinth.
More recently, he’s been out on the road with La La La producer Naughty Boy, playing some huge venues in the process and releasing his debut single, Money, Doe, Paper. 2014 could be his year…
I first started writing music because…
It was a way of expressing myself when I was an adolescent. It really helped as I lived on an estate and there weren’t really many avenues/outlets to express myself in a way where people would understand or not feel threatened or offended. I've always been good with words and had a quick tongue so I gave it a shot.
I have been making music since…
Since I was 13. I used to MC after football with some of the older guys.
My music is…
I'd say very catchy and humorous. I'd like to think my music is a voice for what’s going on within my generation. I add humour to my lyrics so it’s easier for the listener to digest, understand and most importantly enjoy.
You'll like my music if you listen to...
Drake or Wretch 32.
My favourite venue is…
The O2 Arena! It’s so inspirational having such a venue on my stomping ground, South London. Plus knowing that with enough hard work and belief, I may have the opportunity to sell it out one day.
Music is important because…
Like I said before, it’s important because it’s a way of telling your own story in an easily digestible way for all. Music is also important to me as it represents a positive way out of less fortunate situations.
My biggest inspiration is…
My biggest inspiration is probably Drake. How a man can tell his story and make the world relate to it, touch many and also make a living to change the lives of his family is amazing. And all he is doing is being honest.
My dream collaboration would be…
It’s always changing as there are so many great musicians out there inspiring me at different times. Currently its artists over here that I would love to collaborate with. I'm a huge fan of Ed Sheeran and Emeli Sande. They are British artists flying the flag across the globe with original, meaningful and timeless music. It’s all about the right timing with collaborations.
To try me out, listen to my song…
Off The Record. This was a real meaningful song to me at a point which was very pivotal in trying to balance the journey of chasing my dream in music and dealing with everyday realities. This was my way of giving an insight into my world through words.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Maybe trying to make it playing football.
In 10 years time I want to be...
One of the most successful and decorated British rappers who appeals to all people, across all walks of life.
