The brilliantly named Walter Ego has been troubling the bass bins of Sheffield and beyond since 2011.

His live wire mix of house, grime and UK funky has sent him to the forefront of the next generation of South Yorks producers pushing the county's (and the country’s) sonic science forward.

He follows in a long line of digital forefathers - Heaven 17, Cabaret Voltaire and the Human League first made musical love to their machines in Sheffield while Warp Records was birthed in the town. Since then, the likes of I Monster, All Seeing I, Chris Duckenfield and more recently Toddla T have helped ensure that Sheffield continues to be seen as birthplace of the bleep.

Walter Ego aka Josh Gregory is one of the newest producers from the city to make an impact - with both his releases, his appearances at raves and his Bad Taste record label.

Calm Down and She’s A Myth / Hand In My Hand on his own Bad Taste imprint were the initial releases which did serious damage - he went on to hook up with Toddla T’s Girls Music and grime MC Trim on the Super Mario indebted Set Off and DJ Haus’ Unknown to Known to create yet more fierce dancefloor hype. The records, which put grime, hip hop and house in a distinctly edgy, yet cheeky British blender, have seen him earmarked as one to watch by underground tastemakers - his releases are now fixtures in the sets of key players such as Rinse FM and big club DJs Plastician and Monki.

With an incendiary set on last year’s South Yorks Boiler Room takeover under his belt and some weighty releases in the pipeline, 2013 could well be his for the taking...

I first started writing music because…

Because my parents encouraged me to from an early age.

I have been making music since…

I was young. I can’t exactly remember.

My music is…

Bassy electronic music influenced by range of styles from grime to house.

You'll like my sound if you listen to...

Loads of different stuff mainly in the garage spectrum at the moment: Wiley, Disclosure, Sticky, Mosca.

My favourite venue is…

The Sidney Street warehouse in Sheffield – it stands next to the legendary Niche Nightclub.

Music is important because…

It changes the way people feel in a particular moment.

My biggest inspiration is…

Everything inspires me.

My dream collaboration would be…

Moodyman

To try me out, listen to my song…

Hand in my hand ft. 2046

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…

Working in design

In 10 years time I want to be...

Happy making music that I love.
