Turtle, the latest project from Glaswegian singer songwriter Jon Cooper, neatly links the intensity of Radiohead with the production prowess of Jon Hopkins or James Blake.

On his latest release for Beatnik Creative, Who Knows EP, his leftfield pop leanings come into focus against a backdrop of bulky beats and murky electronics - leaving a warm glow after each listen.

Jon augments all his music with live instrumentation which effortlessly ratchets up the intensity and contrast against his stark vocals and dusty rhythms.

Although this is Jon’s first EP as Turtle, he’s already being championed by blogs including Line of Best Fit and This is Fake DIY, and is definitely one to keep your eye on going into 2014.

We spent 30 seconds with him to find out what spurs him on…

I first started writing music because…
I heard the album Oxygene by Jean Michel Jarre at the age of 11 and it completely inspired me to learn keyboard and figure out how the hell he did it.

I have been making music since…
I was 12.

My music is…
My Life.

You'll like me if you listen to...
Boards of Canada.

My favourite venue is…
That's difficult. In London, Union Chapel for its intimacy, but I'd also love to play Shepherds Bush 02 for its incredible history.

Music is important because…
It makes you think and feel and connect.

My biggest inspiration is…
A thick and layered oscillating ambient synth pad drenched in a universe of reverb.

My dream collaboration would be…
With Thom Yorke of course.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Who Knows or Opposite Of Low.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Making movies.

In 10 years time I want to be...
In my own studio in the countryside making neo-minimalist-future-jazz-step-punktronica-wave-music.
