Trwbador

Trwbador have wowed the Welsh pop world with their delicate combination of sixties folk and modern electronic sounds. Following their success at festivals such as Green Man, the pair have drawn an abundance of interest in their self-titled debut album, released in April this year. It’s been warmly received by the likes of Lauren Laverne and Huw Stephens and gained them a nomination for the annual Welsh Music Prize. We dive into Trwbador’s minds to uncover the inspiration behind their music…

When it comes to blending folk and electronics, not many musicians are doing it with as much charm as Welsh pair Trwbador.

Hailing from rural Carmarthenshire, this avant duo have enchanted Welsh pop fans and beyond with a number of releases and well-received gigs.

The gentle, yet expressive vocals of Angharad Van Rijswijk evoke a sense of serene naivety, floating alongside Owain Gwilym’s beautiful guitar playing. They weave synths, electro beats and digital rhythms around their melodies to inform  their music.

With their first two self-released EPs, Trwbador now release songs via their own label Owlet Music: ‘We make music in our flat in west Wales, then release it to the world via our label,’ they say on their Soundcloud page.

Since then, a collaboration with Cornershop on their 2012 Christmas release Every Year So Different, has led to a second on Twrbador’s self-titled debut album.

Meanwhile, their intimate, ethereal style has sparked praise from Q Magazine, Lauren Laverne and Huw Stephen. All this talk has led to a Welsh Music Prize nomination for their latest album. Read the full list of nominees for the prize.

They also played a rapturously received set at this year's Green Man festival. M quizzed them for 30 Seconds to found out what inspires them to create their quirky sound…

We first started writing music because…
Our paths crossed and our visions combined.

We have been making music since…
3am.

Our music is…
Pretty simple and it goes boom, twinkle.

You'll like us if you listen to…
Tunng, Gorky's, Hot Chip, Coco Rosie.

Our favourite venue is…
Cookie Jar, or maybe Telford’s Warehouse.

Music is important because…
It is a form of communication that transcends language.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Technology.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Elvis (Owain), or Air (Angharad).

To try us out, listen to our song…
Sun in the Winter.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Sleeping or working outdoors.

In 10 years time we want to be…
In our thirties.
