This coming together of Manchester musicians includes Richard Young, Christian and Nicky Madden from The Earlies, Nathan Sudders from The Whip and Liam Frost. As Tokolosh, their head-expanding sound builds on the shapes they have been pulling with their previous bands over the past decade.
Their first release for Static Caravan - The Hollow/TOKOHORSE – showed off both sides of their sound, with lead track The Hollow packing a weighty pysch punch. Meanwhile TOKOHORSE was a more groove-orientated affair. Later tracks Shapeshifter and Bloodlines have offered a more prog-rock take on their synthy foundations.
We spent 30 seconds with the band to find out what else they have in store...
How long have you been making music?
Tokolosh have been making music since 2011. Before all of this happened we had all been making music separately, in various guises, for a couple of years.
What inspired your new release?
Tokolosh's debut double a-side single The Hollow/TOKOHORSE was primarily inspired by the music of the Yacht Rock era, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Jon 'Bones' Jones and the intense, primal drumming of Richard Young.
What process do you go through to create your music?
There really isn't a process, to speak of…these little bits of magic just seemingly drop out of the air and make us want to take off all of our clothes so we can dance the night through. We just hope (know) that everybody else will feel the same.
How would you describe your sound?
Somebody recently described the sound of Tokolosh as progressive soul. I think that collectively, we might possibly take that.
What would your dream collaboration be?
Chaka Khan.
Where can we catch you performing next?
We're pretty much always ready to bring our A-game.
