Holly Ross and David Blackwell are the undisputed nutters behind surreal punk rock outfit The Lovely Eggs – and they won’t mind us saying so either.
Blatantly on mission to whisk things up, their mangled riffs and bizarre lyrical whimsy set them gulfs apart from the rest of the lo-fi pack who are generally going about their DIY business in earnest.
The Eggs instead are hell bent on chaos, calamity and all-round silliness – the holy trinity of sweaty gig greatness.
Track titles such as Panic Plants, Magic Onion and Goofin’ Around (in Lancashire) provide further evidence of their overriding urge to entertain - and anyone in any doubt should bear witness during their upcoming tour this April (dates below).
But this isn’t just niche weirdness: the duo’s latest LP, This Is Our Nowhere, garnered an 8/10 review in NME and much support from BBC 6 Music, including two sessions for Marc Riley, who made their most recent single Goofin’ Around (in Lancashire) one of his top tracks for 2015.
Here, the pair let us in on their topsy-turvy world…
We first started writing music because…
No rhyme. Certainly no reason.
We have been making music since…
A pigeon laid two eggs in an abandoned nest outside our window in Paris in 2006. We decided to do a band with no rules.
Our music is…
Like listening to Black Sabbath while reading Richard Brautigan.
You'll like our music if you listen to...
Surreal DIY punk rock.
Our favourite venue is…
Usually a seventies working men's club. The Arden Road Social Club in Halifax is a cracking venue and we love The Brudenell in Leeds. We like playing places that are odd and old. Deaf Institute in Manchester is also a cracker.
Music is important because…
Anyone can do it.
Our biggest inspiration is…
The magic and mundaneness of daily life.
Our dream collaboration would be…
A nightmare for them.
To try us out, listen to our song…
Magic Onion.
If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Goofin' around in Lancashire.
In 10 years’ time we want to be…
Adored, sedated, Bobby's Girl etc…
