Temple Songs

What would happen if The Beatles, Ty Segall and Wavves were melted down and forged into one almighty supergroup? The resulting psychedelic hybrid might sound a lot like rising Manchester four-piece Temple Songs. NME has already compared their music to the early work of Blur, and perhaps rightfully so - there's definitely a touch of acid-tinged baggy in there somewhere. In July they unleashed Passed Caring, their debut single on RIP Records. Noisy in all the right places, its overriding scuzzy sixties aesthetic comes at you like a long lost Nuggets classic.

In July, Jolan Lewis (guitar, vocals), Jean Hughes (guitar), Dave Hardy (bass) and Andrew Richardson (drums) unleashed Passed Caring, their debut single on RIP Records. Noisy in all the right places, its itchy percussion sounds as though somebody donated an extra drummer to The Beach Boys, while its overriding scuzzy sixties aesthetic comes at you like a long lost Nuggets classic.

The release caused quite a twitch among UK-wide tastemakers including The Quietus and This Is Fake DIY, who have heralded its arrival with much fanfare. Elsewhere, their fuzzed up psych-rock has been getting plenty of air time from BBC radio DJs Lauren Laverne, Jon Kennedy and Zane Lowe.

In between writing and recording their debut album, and performing with the likes of Palma Violets and Egyptian Hip Hop, we caught up with Jolan to find out what makes the band tick.

We first started writing music because…
There were some songs I wanted to listen to but they didn't exist yet.

We have been making music since…
1988 or so.

Our music is…
Sounds we like organised in a way we find enjoyable. Sometimes we use sounds we don't like, but we kind of do like them too, but because we don't like them, if you know what I mean? I'm not very good at explaining myself.

You'll like us if you listen to...
Your parents.

Our favourite venue is…
KRAAK Gallery in Manchester. People are more than happy to enjoy themselves there.

Music is important because...
I don't want to work in a shop.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Music/not wanting to work in a shop.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Paul McCartney.

To try us out, listen to our song…
You Don't Smile Nearly Enough.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Working in a shop.

In 10 years time we want to be...
I know what I don't want to be doing...
