SINAH

Electronic artist SINAH’s (as in Xena: Warrior Princess) name is on point after you’ve given her fantastical and experimental music a listen. She gave up a career in science to specialise in making mysterious electronica which has earnt her a Sky Ferreira support and comparisons to the likes of Grimes, The xx and Nicolas Jaar. Check out her Nobody Knows SINAH EP and her remix of Alt-J's Breezeblocks to hear her great mix of fragile vocals and tough, bass work outs…

Comparisons to Grimes, The xx and Nicolas Jaar are unsurprising for electronic artist SINAH (pronounced Xena).

London-based by way of Berlin, her experimental electronic work outs reference everything from Bjork to Bonobo with their off kilter melodies, experimental sounds all cut through with an acute sense of bass.

June 2012 saw SINAH release her debut four-track EP Nobody Knows SINAH via her own label ZNA records market and collect much praise from the right corners of the internet.

She’s gone on to release a well received remix of Alt-J’s Breezeblocks, turning the original into a hypnotic, shuffling killer. As with much of her output, it’s highly addictive and shows off her winning way with a vocal hook and her production box of tricks

SINAH is subsequently working on pulling together her debut album and continuing to showcase the visual extravaganza which is her live show.

M caught up with her for 30 Seconds to find out where she’d love to be in 10 years time…

I first started writing music because…
I simply felt like it. No big dramas back then. I only wrote music because of the beauty that can be created with an instrument.

I have been making music since…
I was about eight when I started learning the classical piano, but I lost interest in sight reading quite quickly and only started coming back to music through composing at the age of 14.

My music is…
Sometimes commercial, other times twisted and deep. Whatever comes natural to me when writing.

You'll like my music if you listen to...
Bonobo, Bat for Lashes, James Blake, Grimes and Kid Cudi.

My favourite venue is…
Koko in Camden or the Hackney Empire. Mostly theatre type venues because the atmosphere creates more of a listening-vibe than other concert venues.

Music is important because…
It takes away from your everyday obligations and puts a bit of fun, beauty and connection into life.

My biggest inspiration is…
Other artists who create music with integrity and honesty. My biggest inspiration is definitely people who don't strive for fame or acknowledgement and fight for something they believe in, which is not necessarily for their own profit - such as conservationists.

My dream collaboration would be…
With the producers of Feist or Bat for Lashes. The production is amazing ... so subtle, beautiful and special. Up until now I haven't worked with any producers but I believe I'd be able to learn lots from them and apply it afterwards in my music.

To try me out, listen to my song…
True To Yourself. In the beginning it may be hard to get into because it's a bit weird and changes quite a lot. I suppose it needs a couple of listens to realise where I'm going. The production and message definitely reflects the title of the song to me. If you want something easier, go for Just Ok, which is hopefully better than the title implies...

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
An oceanologist.

In 10 years time I want to be…
Living in the desert with a man, a kid, lots of animals and a badass music studio with lots of REAL instruments.
