Born in north-west London, Shanty are an eclectic, seven piece group offering up a modern twist on classic roots reggae.

The band’s debut release emerged in 2013 with the group busying themselves with a hectic schedule of touring and festival shows ever since. It’s a live dedication which has seen them grace the stages of a range of festivals including Boomtown Fair, Leopallooza, Secret Garden Party and Glastonbury. They’ve played with the likes of Prince Fatty, The Skints and Neville Staple of the Specials and been playlisted by Gary Crowley on BBC Introducing; it's an ongoing buzz of activity firmly underlining Shanty as ones to watch.

Their debut EP Leave Me Out - out this week - was recorded at the Sawmills studio in Cornwall with previous alumni including Oasis and the Stone Roses. The four tracks of the release certainly represent a step forward for the group, managing to sound more polished yet still retaining the pop hooks and reggae spirit they’ve become loved for…

We first started writing music because…
We were coming towards the end of our time at Uni and decided to start something for real.

We have been making music since…
2013.

Our music is…
A sandwich of raw reggae, soul & electronic elements.

You'll like our music if you listen to...
Fat Freddy's Drop, Finley Quaye, The Skints.

Our favourite venue is…
The Magic Garden, Battersea.

Music is important because…
It's what we know, it's all we know...

Our biggest inspiration is…
Bob Marley, Jeff Buckley, the list goes on...

Our dream collaboration would be…
Paolo Nutini or Jimmy Cliff.

To try us out, listen to the song…
Our latest release Leave Me Out. The music video involves a boat, a river and a gorilla.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Not so poor haha who knows...

In 10 years time we want to be...
Receiving lots of royalties from our good friends PRS.
