Scarlette Fever

These days singer songwriter Karen Lousie Barrow is better known as Scarlette Fever, purveyor of classic pop tunes as catchy as her namesake. Since emerging in 2011, Scarlette has built a solid live following in both the UK and US and has enjoyed a BBC Radio 2 playlist hat-trick for her last three singles. Not bad for an artist yet to release her debut album... We caught up with her to learn what makes her tick.

Since emerging in 2011, Scarlette has built a solid live following, helped by support tours with Caro Emerald, Mike & The Mechanics and Roachford.

Alongside shows in Los Angeles and across the US, Scarlette has also scored consecutive BBC Radio 2 playlists for singles Crash & Burn with Elated.

Her latest release, Single White Female EP, hits the shelves on 30 September and has brought her third BBC Radio 2 playlisting.

Brooding lead track Sunday Best, which was co-written by Scarlette and her long-time collaborators Chris Moorhead and Angie Pollack, offers an insight into the solid songwriting nous expected on her debut album Attack of the 6ft Woman, which drops early next year.

We spent 30 seconds with her to find out more…

I first started writing music because…

I was frustrated singing other people’s tunes. I figured if you want something done, you better do it yourself.

I have been making music since…
I didn’t start writing my own tunes until I was about 19.

My music is…
All of me.

You'll like my music if you listen to...
That’s a hard one!!! I’ve been inspired by such a wide variety of music and artists and inevitably those flavours shape my sound but ultimately, I guess if you like good pop tunes new and old than hopefully you’ll get my stuff.

My favourite venue is…
The Royal Albert Hall. Performing there was most definitely the highlight of my career so far.

Music is important because…
It’s like a best friend.

My biggest inspiration is…
Dusty Springfield.

My dream collaboration would be…
Coldplay.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Crash and Burn, it’s the first tune of mine that BBC Radio 2 playlisted.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
A mad neurosurgeon.

In 10 years time I want to be...
Sipping a banana daiquiri on a beach in Barbados without having to sell my car and little toe to do so.
