Geoff Barrow-approved Bristolian four-piece Scarlet Rascal create the kind of filthy, low-lit garage-rock that makes you want to let loose and get under the influence.

Wiry guitar lines and an ultra-lean rhythm section prune all the best bits from post-punk, while their louche vocals and doo-wop flourishes throw early sixties’ ephemera into the mix.

The band is formed of Luke Brookes (vocals, guitar, keys), James Stockhausen (bass), Richard Clarke (guitar) and Maya Indelicato (vocals, drums, percussion) – a taut outfit riffing on the distant reverberations of Joy Division and Suicide.

With their debut, self-titled album now out on Barrow's Invada label, and the final date in a tour with Drowners fast approaching (at The Lexington, London, 21 October), we check in with Luke to find out more…

I first started making music because…
There was a guitar in the house.

I have been making music since…
I was about 15.

Our music is…
Growing.

You'll like our music if you listen to...
Jonathan Richman.

My favourite venue is…
The Cube Cinema.

Music is important because…
What else is there?

My biggest inspiration is…
Bob Dylan.

My dream collaboration would be…
John Parish.

To try us out, listen to our track…
Strange.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Lost.

In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Who knows?
