South London-based songwriter and producer Royce Wood Junior uses squiffy machine funk and glistening, chrome vocals as the vehicle for his sounds.
Royce’s production style started off as a hobby, borrowing studio time from his bosom chum Jamie Woon. He cut his teeth performing in the latter’s band while also working on tracks for other new talents such as Jono McCleery, Kwabs and Denai Moore.
Earlier this year, Royce showed off the first fruits of his solo labours with the unveiling of his Tonight Matthew EP on new label Parlez Parlez. The release, in particular Nuff, converted BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and MistaJam into fans and stirred up some online froth around future material.
Royce has now announced his signing to 37 Adventures with the follow up release, the four track EP, Rover. A collection featuring his trademark falsetto, lurching computer funk and dreamy electronica. Meet Royce in our 30 seconds interview below…
I first started writing music because…
The internet hadn't been invented.
I have been making music since…
‘97.
My music is…
A work in progress.
You'll like my music if you listen to...
Jono McCleery.
Music is important because…
Life is a mistake without it.
My biggest inspiration is…
Stevie Wonder.
My dream collaboration would be…
Rufus Wainwright.
To try me out, listen to my song…
Rover.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
In the gutter but not looking at the stars.
In 10 years time I want to be...
Still interested in music.
