Upcoming London artist Robbie Boyd creates the kind of feel-good folk that has pricked the ears of The Kinks’ songwriting ace Ray Davies.

Already the finished article, Robbie’s music is akin to Mumford and Sons or Passenger, with luscious melodies and wistful lyrics by the bucketload.

Robbie is already a formidable force on the live circuit too, having sold out his last seven headline shows, including Bush Hall and The Borderline.

Meanwhile, his debut album So Called Man has received support from BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music, plus Graham Norton, Paul O’Grady, Jeremy Vine and Tim Rice.

We spend 30 seconds with him to learn more about his folk-driven groove…

I first started writing music because…
It was a great creative outlet for my thoughts - and cathartic for the break ups too! It was something I was actually good at and got positive feedback from. Especially when I found that I could make more money on the streets from busking my own songs, than by singing covers. So I just kept going.

I have been making music since…
About 2005 when I had my first 'jamming' session with friends. Creating something out of nothing really appealed to me, and I've had the bug ever since.

My music is…
Catchy, honest, and life affirming, combining twisting melodies and wistful lyrics, with a hopeful folk-driven twang.

You'll like me if you listen to...
Bombay Bicycle Club, Passenger, George Ezra, Kodaline, Ed Sheeran et al.

My favourite venue is…
O2 Shepherds Bush Empire, I've played there twice, and watched so many great artists that I admire play there, plus I grew up round the corner!

Music is important because…
It connects with people's souls, brings people together, crosses language barriers, lifts people up when they're down, and lets people know that they are not alone in their own thoughts and experiences.

My biggest inspiration is…
Observing what's going on around me, listening to conversations, having relationships, seeing friends, debating, loving, reading poems and books, watching films, the news, walking in parks, James Taylor, The Beatles, Johnny Flynn and Bob Dylan.

My dream collaboration would be…
Paul McCartney, Bon Iver or Lykke Li.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Orions' Belt.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
I'm currently helping run an organisation called PeaceBeats which helps young disadvantaged people realise their potential through music events and creative workshops. So I'd be doing more of that.

In 10 years’ time I want to be...
Writing hit songs for and collaborating with the best artists out there, recording my fifth album, and headlining Glastonbury!
