Devon trio These Reigning Days have an ear for melodic rock and an eye firmly on the mainstream.

Their music blends the super stadium-friendly anthemics of Coldplay or Muse with buried driving riffs that echo the brash rock ‘n’ roll they grew up listening to.

After two years of continual touring, supporting the likes of Metronomy and playing at Glastonbury, Hop Farm and Liverpool Sound City, the trio somehow managed to get their debut album out into the world.

Opera of Love, which was released on 22 September, channels the momentum of their relentless live schedule into an inventive soundscape of electronic flourishes, soaring choruses and driving guitars.

We catch up with Dan Steer (vocals, guitar, keys), Joe Sansome (drums) and Jonny Finnis (bass, vocals) to learn more about the evolution of their sound…

We first started writing music because...
We literally have nothing else. It was a natural step for three musician friends who began drinking together, it was never going to take long for us to hit the rehearsal room up. Dan our songwriter has been writing music since he was a teenager. It is in our blood.

We have been making music together since...
I think 2011? But don't ask us, we're awful with dates. I've forgotten my own birthday before. We had all been in bands before but These Reigning Days feels like our spiritual home.

Our music is...
Ours. It borderlines on a collection of catchy hooks with nods to artists we love. We never intended to sound like anything other than the result of who we are. We make the music that we all like to listen to individually. We like balls-out rock ‘n’ roll, we like pop, electro...so we threw it all together and got [our song] Opera of Love.

You'll like us if you listen to...
The Killers, Foo Fighters, Muse, anything with balls.

Our favourite venue is...
I don't think we have a favourite. The San Siro stadium was wild, but I doubt we can class that as a regular haunt!

Music is important because...
Because you can turn it up and drown out the tedious noise of 9-5 life. It's an escape.

Our biggest inspiration is...
KFC.

Our dream collaboration would be...
De la soul. London Philharmonic Orchestra, or maybe, just maybe Moriaty.

To try us out, listen to our song...
Thrones.

If we weren't making music we'd be...
Buying our new album on iTunes! Or stuck in some shitty old job dreaming about being in a band again!

In 10 years’ time we want to be...
Not dead. Still together, with more albums than Spinal Tap and playing shows bigger than we are now.
