Singer, songwriter and producer Pim Stones distills all the base elements of classic heartbreaker pop into stark, soulful simplicity.
By filtering out the background noise and relying only the strength of his pen, Pim’s songs are as bold as they are beautiful.
Having packed in his helicopter pilot training to concentrate on songwriting, he is now preparing to take flight with his exquisite debut EP We Have It All.
It’s released on 1 June through Put Me On It, and proves the North Essex troubadour is worth his songwriting salt.
Like James Blake, Jamie Woon or Lana del Rey, his music embraces rolling drums, gorgeous melodies and the intimate warmth of unhurried vocals.
We caught up with this rising talent to learn more…
I have been making music since…
I was 15. Although, I'm not sure you could call what I was making back then music.
My music is…
Pop music, with a lot of orchestral instruments.
You'll like me if you listen to...
Someone the other day likened my music to The Smiths and Lana Del Rey. I'm a fan of both so I guess that makes sense.
My favourite venue is…
The Roundhouse in London. I've been going there since I was 14. Beyond the live stuff, it's a brilliant place for young people to learn and explore new things: they hold many affordable, if not free, creative after school classes and talks and events and wotnot.
Music is important because…
It makes life more colourful.
My biggest inspiration is…
Film music. From Goldfinger to Beasts of the Southern Wild, there're so many films with great scores.
My dream collaboration would be…
Maybe Kanye West or a great film score composer like Clint Mansell.
To try me out, listen to my song…
We Have It All.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
A helicopter pilot, working alongside cameramen for those awesome wildlife programmes. I doubt they use the same pilot for all the different parts of the world they shoot at, but it would be cool if they did, and to be that guy!
In 10 years’ time I want to be...
Lucky enough to be earning a living from doing what I love.
