Out Cold is the new solo outfit for Simon Aldred, frontman of Manchester indie act Cherry Red.
With the group on an indefinite break, Simon has decided to go it alone and exchange his guitars for synths and a new, sleek electronic outlook.
Rather than being forever tagged as a dour northern troubadour, Out Cold is the sound of Simon breaking the mould and exploring the full extent of his songwriting muscles.
Instead of introspection, this new guise offers a blend of DIY beats, machine bleeps and soaring lo-fi soul which leans more towards the dancefloor than the bedsit.
He’s teamed up with Metronomy and NZCA Lines producer Ash Workman on his debut album proper. Invasions of Love is released by Heavenly Records on 2 September while the single Sorrow drops the week after. The latter is upbeat and infectious while All I Want, another album teaser is more psychedelic and intoxicating.
Remixes from Ewan Pearson and Dave Okumu are also show that Simon’s got great friends. We caught him for 30 Seconds to find out what makes him and his music work…
I first started writing music because…
I was a shy kid and it made me look cool in front of my friends.
I have been making music since…
I was nine years old.
My music is…
Considered.
You'll like my music if you listen to...
Bobby Womack.
My favourite venue is…
Anywhere in Glasgow.
Music is important because…
It dignifies my existence.
My biggest inspiration is…
My three legged cat.
My dream collaboration would be…
Bill Withers.
To try me out, listen to my song…
Sorrow.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
A gastroenterologist.
In 10 years time I want to be...
Writing songs for Beyonce The Musical.
