Crystal clear harmonies, ringing fiddles, acoustic finger-picking – Moulettes clearly have all their folk credentials in order.

With five years of touring and three albums under their belt, this blissful Brighton quintet are skilled songwriters and performers masterfully respecting the folk tradition.

Blending timeless acoustics with indie and prog aesthetics, they have attracted a wide audience over the years, who fall in love with their magical sound and unexpected instrumentation.

We were lucky enough to catch up with them before their hectic 2015 touring schedule kicks in to learn more about their sound…

We have been making music as Moulettes since...
We can remember.

Our music is… worth a taste.
You'll like us if you listen to...lots of different things- there are many moods to Moulettes. But Bjork, Kate bush, Dirty Projectors, Dirty Three, Levellers, Tune-Yards, The Beatles, Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa are some shared loves that we would love to be compared with….particularly as we go on.

Our favourite venue is...
12 Bar Club, Soho, on Tin Pan Alley - where we hosted our monthly night in the early years, with bands such as Mystery Jets and Noisettes on the bill. It became a place of many happy memories for us. Sadly, the 12 bar is imminently being shut down. Recently, we were lucky enough to play The Sage, Gateshead twice, once supporting Bellowhead and the other with The Levellers. We think that is one of the best sounding big venues.

Music is important because...
It is a language where words are unnecessary. It manages to mainly be a peaceful endeavour that brings people together and facilitates a culture of collaboration & mutual respect. A Picture can paint a 1000 words but music can paint a 1000 pictures…it facilitates an appreciation of creating something which is ‘more than the sum of its parts’ and by doing this we expand our event horizon….when living in Birmingham we heard the phrase ‘drop beats not bombs’….it is said the Estonians sang their enemies out of their country. It is also one of the UK’s admired and biggest exports…

Our biggest inspiration is...
Anyone who attempts to be creative and imaginative… humour, people, places, the natural world, fiction, non-fiction…so much to be fascinated by.

Our dream collaboration would be...
With Bjork, or Tom Waits, or Leonard Cohen…or all three, imagine that!

To try us out, listen to our song...
Between 2 Mirrors or Land of the Midnight Sun

If we weren't making music we'd be…
Great athletes by now.

In 10 years’ time we want to be...
Playing music and exploring the world, making more new friends and meeting new artistic collaborators.

The Moulettes' new single Glorious Year is out now on Navigator Records.
