Formed back in Northampton 2010, The Moons are the musical brainchild of singer and producer Andy Crofts.
Strong melodies are at the heart of a songwriter who looks to the likes of Burt Bacharach and the Animals as well as the Zutons and Coral to inspiration.
He’s already released Life On Earth (2010) and Fables of History (2012) while fans of Paul Weller will possibly recognise him as the keyboard player in the Modfather’s band.
Joined by Ben Gordelier - drums, Ben Curtis - bass and Chris Watson - guitar, Andy’s latest release is the forthcoming Mindwaves, out on 21 July via Schnitzel Records.
While the sound of the record is undoubtedly rooted in classic songwriting harking back to the glorious psych and freakbeat acts, the Moons manage to bring a sense of urgency and energy which makes them much more than an exercise in nostalgia. Glorious production and ambitious songs make the stand out from the rest - you should enter their orbit with this latest record…
I first started writing music because…
It was my calling. I have no school grades or anything else. Music was just second nature. Even before I could play an instrument or write a song, I felt I had a connection with music and knew I would one day write my own songs. When listening to music or thinking about it, I used to see colours and I knew it was just a matter of time.
We have been making music since…
The Moons started making music officially as a band in 2010 but I had started around 2008 with a bunch of demos. It wasn't until there was keen interest from lots of other people that it became more. It was then that this solo project became The Moons.
Our music is…
A light filled crystal of colour and melody exploding into a prism of light and darkness.
You'll like our music if you listen to...
David Bowie, The Zombies, The Bees, The Kinks, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Buzzcocks, Slade and the Last Shadow Puppets.
Our favourite venue is…
Indra in Hamburg - we had a really good night there.
Music is important because…
It's an honest relationship between artist and audience. Music gives people a chance to escape from reality and dream.
Our biggest inspiration is…
As a collective I would The Rutles.
Our dream collaboration would be…
David Bowie. There are so many sides to him and I'd love to work with him. Michael Jackson would have been good Off The Wall era.
To try us out, listen to our songs…
Heart and Soul or Jennifer Sits Alone. These are two sides to the Moons.
If I weren’t making music I'd be…
Creating in some kinda way. Probably doing photography or painting.
In 10 years time we want to be...
Recording and writing new music while sat on the moon sipping a cocktail watching earth from a far.
The Moons release new album Mindwaves on 21 July on Schnitzel Records.
