Moonbow is the cosmic brainchild of creative polymath Eleanor Hardwick.
Her celestial electronics echo the sound of the labels littering her record collection, from 4AD to Hyperdub, Warp to Lovers Rock.
Alongside a flurry of lauded solo and collaborative releases, Eleanor also forms part of Siren Collective with eight female-identified DJs and producers who lay on inclusive club nights under the slogan ‘no bullshit, just dancing’.
With a live London show coming up later this month, plus a DJ set at the Moth Club in the diary, we spend 30 seconds with Eleanor to learn more about her astronomic sonics…
I first started making music because…
I realised I'd had things to say that I could only express through the medium of sound.
I have been making music since…
2013 (excluding the a capella pop band I had with my BFF when we were five years old).
My music is…
A DIY chopped and screwed approach that structurally and lyrically aims to communicate my own philosophical and political concepts - rather than ever setting out to create a ‘good song.’
I'm most drawn to big industrial beats and spacey synth sounds, and my compositional approach is definitely adding tiny details until there's room for no more. I tend to make things you can just about dance to but also wallow in your own wistfulness to.
You'll like my music if you listen to...
Anything of along the rosters of 4AD, Hyperdub, No Pain In Pop, Ninja Tune, Warp, Young Turks, Brainfeeder, Upset The Rhythm, Ghost Box, Lovers Rock, Illian Tapes... (at least those are the labels I dig anyway!)
My favourite venue is…
Rye Wax in Peckham for techno and tacos, Moth Club in Hackney for amazing live gigs within a glitter-covered scene from Twin Peaks, and DIY Space on Old Kent Road for just about everything else to cover your political, art and musical desires.
Music is important because…
It's very hard not to engage people with music, whether that's making people dance to your music, manifesting your emotions into a tangible form that others can relate to, or its potential to spread political messages. Music is one of the oldest and most powerful forms of pleasure and communication - even birds make music.
My biggest inspiration is…
Modern dystopia. Good art often comes from a discontent of your surroundings.
My dream collaboration would be…
That's really hard, I could list hundreds! Let's say Arca, Holly Herndon or James Cargill from Broadcast.
To try me out, listen to my piece…
Altering Ego - or the album when it is out!
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Most likely still making things in any other medium that I could!
In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Able to explore, exhibit and release a lot of work without compromise, and be in a situation where I can also help and support others less privileged and more marginalised than myself.
