Molly’s music is both minimal and epic, setting raw vocal emotion against an eighties’ new wave pop backdrop.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Rufus Wainwright, New Order and Eurythmics, her crystal-cut vocals swim in a sea of pop-infused electronics. But, rather than go wholesale retro, Molly peddles a similar stripped back sound to New Zealand’s biggest teen export Lorde.

So far, her formula has pricked the ears of tastemakers at The 405 and The Guardian even though she's yet to officially release a note. All that's about to change on 20 Janaury, when her debut single Night Dreams arrives hot on the heels of a string of glimmering Soundcloud posts.

We caught up with Molly ahead of its release to find out about her love of eighties’ romance films and hear how she’d be in Japan running a kitten café if it wasn’t for the music…

I first started writing music because…
It was fun. Later it became more of a passion.

I have been making music since…
There's a recording of me when I was three making up songs about going to school. That progressed to writing toplines for all the demo tracks on a vintage keyboard my parents bought me when I was eight or nine. It must have been pretty weird to hear me singing my own creations over the backing track to Hotel California.

My music is…
All about power ballads and torch songs.

You'll like me if you listen to...
Eighties’ movie soundtracks.

My favourite venue is…
Union Chapel is beautiful, Royal Festival Hall is wonderful and I've had the most fun running wild at Butlins for All Tomorrow’s Parties. But a festival + great weather is pretty hard to beat, Latitude 2010 was a particularly great year.

Music is important because…
It's one of the ways we carve out expression and relate to each other. Creativity is what makes human existence joyful and meaningful - and I mean that in a purely secular sense.

My biggest inspiration is…
Movie love, real life and definitely literature - I've always got at least three different audiobooks on the go.

My dream collaboration would be…
Yeasayer - they make my heart sing.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Night Dreams.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
In Japan running a cat café.

In 10 years time I want to be...
Still having fun. My parents are proof to me that the party doesn't stop, the wine just gets better…
