MC Merky Ace has been on the lips of grime tastemakers for some time with an energetic flow and powerful way with the mic.

Growing up in Lewisham, Merky has been a key member of the Family Tree collective, winning over the likes of DJ Cameo and Tim Westwood with a series of well received mixtapes, EPs and performances at underground raves across the capital and beyond.

2015 sees this effervescent MC take the next step in his musical career, joining the ranks of Dizzee Rascal’s Dirtee Stank label and hooking up with ace producer (and one half of the Newham Generals), Footsie.

The result is the forthcoming EP, Peak Levels, an ace collection of grime moments including ripper Cuss Match. If you’re familiar with Merky then you’ll love where he’s going - if you’re not, then this is a great introduction to a talent who deserves his time in the spotlight… get to know him below…

I first started writing music because…
I was inspired by the movement music creates in people. Hearing American rap and early garage made me start writing. When the people local to me were all becoming MCs it also motivated me to actually go for it and put pen to paper.

I have been making music since…
2002-2003 is when I started making music seriously. But I had the Fisher Price cassette recorder and Mic toy, so even earlier if we’re talking of recording.

My music is…
Street inspired music of all types and topics. My most suited and comfortable lane is grime but it doesn't start or end there.

You'll like my music if you listen to...
Energetic hype music. I couldn't relate myself to another artist but the energy present in most grime runs riot in mine.

My favourite venue is…
Fabric but the Alibi was my training ground so I hold it close to my heart.

Music is important because…
It paints pictures that words alone just spoken can't. That’s important to me

My biggest inspiration is…
The MCs I work with in Family Tree. Other than that I would say Dizzee Rascal. He’s the MC that made me realise there is more to this than just being known on your block.

My dream collaboration would be…
Chief Keef or R.A from RSG's. I believe I've done tracks with everyone else I've wanted too as my career has progressed.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Cuss Match taken from my Peak Levels EP produced by Footsie. It represents my current direction in what I'm doing and enjoying at the moment.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Probably playing football or working with computers.

In 10 years’ time I want to be...
In a place doing things I didn't think was possible with the people I've always been with. Onwards and upwards.
