Memory Maze is the hazy alter ego of London-based producer Gavin Ellis.

Through labyrinthine layers of washed out guitars, Gavin allows his songs the room to breathe and take on an otherworldly quality.

Dubbed ‘guitar music that would sound good on pills’ by Q Magazine, his brand of poised pop echoes the psychedelic strains of The Flaming Lips or Mercury Rev, while his zonked out guitars bring to mind the pedal boards of Spacemen 3 or Connan Mockasin.

His latest single, Like a Mirage, documents the fall out from a broken relationship, and unlike its lyrical impetus, its roomy basslines, chorused guitars and wonky synths collide to form a fulsome marriage of sound.

Gavin’s debut album, From the Outside In, is set to follow on Infinite Jest Records later this year.

We recently spent 30 seconds with him to learn more…

I first started writing music because…
...of curiosity, wanting to know if I could get anywhere close to matching my favourite records. Then before you know it it’s an indispensable element of your life.

I have been making music since…
I was a teenager, although I wouldn’t want you to hear some of the stuff I wrote then, or the band names.

My music is…
Woozy.

You'll like me if you listen to…
So far I’ve been compared to The Radio Dept, Sade, The Flaming Lips and Robert Wyatt - make of that what what you will, I’m still trying to figure it out.

My favourite venue is…
There used to be an amazing venue in Bradford called the Queen’s Hall, where I saw my first and most formative gigs.

Music is important because…
Where to start… because it’s a release and a refuge, because it can make you laugh and it can make you cry.

My biggest inspiration is…
Fear.

My dream collaboration would be…
I’d love to work with Dave Fridmann.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Like A Mirage.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Unfulfilled.

In 10 years time I want to be…
Still passionate and creative.
