Art-house pop, a 30 piece orchestra and found sounds all feed into the musical make up of Welsh artist Meilyr Jones.

Formerly frontman of indie band Race Horses, since their break up Meilyr has struck out as a solo singer songwriter, using his latest venture to embrace a new-found creative freedom.

The group’s demise saw Meilyr journey to Rome, drawn by a fascination with sculpture and Byron and Berlioz, and spending his days sucking in the classical culture.

On his return he put together a new collection of songs, many with an orchestra ‘out of friends, and friends of friends of friends’, showing off a new found oddball sound, veering from the grandiose to the more meek and confessional. These latest tunes have become his debut solo album 2013, just released on home of all that is independent and good Moshi Moshi.

We spent 30 seconds with Meilyr to (briefly) get beneath the skin of the man and his music…

I first started writing music because…
It was fun and it happened.

I have been making music since…
I was eight.

My music is…
Your music.

You'll like my music if you listen to…
It.

Music is important because…
It is beyond language and rises unexplained, and abstracts.

My biggest inspiration is…
My grandmother, and nature, love and solitude.

My dream collaboration would be…
Kate Bush.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Featured Artist.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Out of sorts.

In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Myself.
