Mixing pop sounds with disco synths is nothing new in 2013 but few do it as slickly or with such youthful vim and vigour as Mausi.
Take the electronic scribbles of Rustie, pin them to a chorus Carly Rae Jepsen wouldn’t be ashamed to call her own, stick a rocket underneath it all and you’ve got Move, the band’s debut single proper and a musical firework set to soundtrack your end of summer.
Half originally hailing from Italy, the foursome initially began concocting their colourful musical enthusiasm in the slightly less sunny climes of Newcastle.
But it was here where their love for the likes Phoenix and Ed Banger’s Breakbot collided over some inspired songwriting ideas and a selection of suitably massive choruses.
Fronted by Italian brother and sister duo Thomas and Daisy Finetto, and joined by friends Ben Brown and Benjamin Huntrods, the group succeeded in cooking up a suitable buzz last summer with sol, a song championed by the BBC Radio 1 Introducing playlist. It attracted more than 200,000 YouTube views and a load of hype which has many music fans in the know thirsty for more.
With the help of producer Mark Ralph (Hot Natured, Hot Chip, Jagwar Ma) Move is set to propel them even further when it finally sees release on 25 August. Check out what they had to say when M spent 30 Seconds with them below…
We first started writing music because…
There was never a conscious decision to start writing music, it was just what naturally happened.
We have been making music since…
We have been making music as Mausi for two years now :)
Our music is…
A sound that accompanies a lifestyle; young, European and carefree.
You'll like our music if you listen to...
Phoenix, Pony Pony Run Run and Breakbot.
Our favourite venue is…
The Cluny - Newcastle, where we played our first gigs as Mausi.
Music is important because…
It makes you feel good.
Our biggest inspiration is…
Where we come from in Italy. Summer at the lakes in the north of Italy were the inspiration for our first single and has been what has got us here now.
Our dream collaboration would be…
Co-writing a track with Phoenix and co-directing the video for it with Sofia Coppola.
To try us out, listen to my song…
Move.
If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Doing anything that involves being creative, whether it is music, fashion, design, directing or producing. Anything.
In 10 years time we want to be...
Doing world tours and collaborating with the people who have inspired us.
