Matthew E White’s combined songwriting nous and vocal delivery are a force of nature. His studied enthusiasm for proper vintage jazz and soul are palpable, with many songs on his debut record Big Inner echoing the mood and melody of Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye.

It seems like the Virginian Beach-based songwriter is excited by much more than just the old greats though; contemporary influences from Eels and Lambchop creep in as Matthew offers up a satisfying blend of old and new.

He’s a gifted jazz arranger and exceptional guitarist in his own right but was joined on Big Inner by bassist Cameron Ralston and drummer Pinson Chanselle. The trio complete the core of his Spacebomb House Band, which is often embellished with horns, string section and a choir.

We caught up with Matthew ahead of his first UK shows to find out where he gets all that soul from…

I first started writing music because…
I fell in love with Chuck Berry and The Beach Boys

I have been making music since…
Sixth grade when I started a grunge band called The Internal Spinning Lightbulbs, recorded ourselves with a tape player placed cleverly in the room and photographed a tape cover through the bottom of a Sprite bottle.

My music is…
Made in Richmond, VA.

You'll like me if you listen to...
Your parents.

My favourite venue is…
Record stores - feed two birds with one seed.

Music is important because it…
Is the Healing Force of the Universe

My biggest inspiration is…
‘The peculiar form of mathematics and harmonies that was strange to all the world.’

My dream collaboration would be…
Andre 3000, Terry Riley, Teo Macero and myself.

To try me out, listen to my song…
One of These Days.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be...
Rewatching Game of Thrones more than usual.

In 10 years time I want to be...
40. Otherwise something has gone terribly wrong.
