Southern English duo Maribou State are masters of euphoric electronics.

Together, rural Hertfordshire natives Chris Davids and Liam Ivory have hit on a truly urban sound that belies their village upbringing.

Debut album Portraits, which was released earlier this month on Ninja Tune imprint Counter Records, successfully pushes that ubiquitous south London electronic sound best optimised by Four Tet, Caribou and Jamie XX into more laidback territory.

Intricate field recordings and vinyl crackles rub against the echo of clubby rhythms and muted synths to create the perfect late night soundtrack.

The result is a sleek, progressive statement of intent that has charmed everyone from Will Saul and Shadow Child to BTraits (BBC Radio 1) and Gilles Peterson (BBC 6 Music).

Fresh from a stunning set at Glastonbury Festival last weekend, the pair are working their way through an epic 32-date European tour, which also takes in Lovebox, Reading/Leeds, Dimensions and Outlook.

We caught up with them to find out more about their expansive sound and their love of all things electronic…

We first started writing music because…
We got bored of covering other bands’ songs.

We have been making music since…
We stop covering other bands’ songs, around the age of 16.

Our music is…
For sale.

You'll like our music if you listen to...
Bonobo, Caribou, Gold Panda. So we’re told. It’s hard to compare yourself to people you aspire too.

Our favourite venue is…
The Roundhouse, Camden.

Music is important because…
It has so many different effects on so many different people.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Our home; where we live.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Curtis, Nina, Michael, there’s a long list.

To try us out, listen to our song…
Home/Wallflower.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Unhappy.

In 10 years’ time we want to be…
Making music still. And to be healthy!
