Afrofuturist Lady Vendredi, alongside her band the Vendettas, launched her new single, What Time Is It? with an evening of dance/theatre, underpinned by a potent cocktail of jazz and bass.
This festival-ready, performance-artist melts down Haitian voodoo grooves over musical hot coals and debuted her live show in 2014 at the Latitude Festival.
What time is it? was written while Lady Vendredi was DJing at a classical music festival in Rio, blending the absurdity of Discordianism crossed with sci fi themes in a mix of vodoo and samba rhythms. She’s now gearing up release her debut EP in 2016, produced by London based trio LV. All the music written for Lady Vendredi's debut EP is for a concept record/soundtrack for the ritual theatre piece The Passion of Lady Vendredi, likened by her to ‘Grace Jones in a live Blaxploitation movie directed by John Waters’. She’s also a Steve Reid Innovation award winner and counts Gilles Peterson, Floating Points and Four Tet amongst her mentors. We spent 30 seconds with the so-called ‘love child of Azealia Banks and Neneh Cherry'…
I first started writing music because…
I was sitting at an organ in the mountains outside of Rio. I was playing a Radiohead track. I felt a sudden urge to write.
I have been making music since…
2009.
My music is…
A reflection of me, slightly straightened out.
You'll like my music if you listen to...
Anything curated by Gilles Peterson.
My favourite venue is…
The Southbank as a whole - what a labyrinth of wonders. Barbican for sound - as long as everybody feels free to stand up. A secret little place called the Lift for vibes.
Music is important because…
There seems to be some innate, possibly evolutionary link between communication, language and our musicality. I think music creates connections on a profound level between ourselves, our memories and how we experience the world.
My biggest inspiration is…
My lucid dreams.
My dream collaboration would be…
Grace Jones.
To try me out, listen to my song…
What Time is It?
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Curating happenings. Or studying neuroscience.
In 10 years’ time I want to be...
Living at CERN, making string theory music.
