‘There’s a thin line between love and hate’, says hip hop star in the making Lady Lykez.
It’s certainly all about extremes with the Lady and her music. New single Psycho is a scathing dissection of passionate relationships while previous release – the controversial I Love My Butt - racked up more than a half million YouTube views and a new band of the day profile in the Guardian.
It also saw her and her music crash into the conscience of many of her contemporaries with the likes of Tinchy Stryder and Lethal Bizzle all tweeting their praises.
2014 is looking good for the Lykez – while 1Xtra are all over Psycho she’s also filiming for a new BBC TV Show due to launch in the autumn. We find out why she's got her heart set on being a star in our 30 seconds interview below…
I first started writing music because…
I started really young, like 12. My older cousin and his boys used to spit, and I used to watch them rapping going to pirate radio and shows. I wanted to be like them. My cousin helped me start writing my own lyrics. I used to write bars and go to the youth club and rap my bars with the guys. It developed into clashing, I liked the competition, used to go around and rap battle all the guys, literally anyone I saw, I tried to battle.
I have been making music since…
I started making music around 15. I started to go to studios around my area and lay down my lyrics onto tracks and developed my battle bars into real full songs and kept going from there. My first song was called It's Lykez - it was a super hyped up grime track.
My music is…
A reflection of my personality - cheeky fun and also very competitive.
You'll like my music if you listen to...
Hip hop.
My favourite venue is…
Outdoors. I love performing at festivals as the crowds energy is always so high.
Music is important because…
It's a form of expression. You can really express your emotions through it and be creative.
My biggest inspiration is…
People that have started from the bottom, worked hard and really made something of themselves.
My dream collaboration would be…
Eminem. I feel like his lyrical ability is amazing, his creative writing and flows always impress me, especially his older stuff.
To try me out, listen to my song…
Psycho. On the lyrics I explore the dynamics of emotions of love and hate in a passionate relationship.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
A youth worker or doing something to uplift young people.
In 10 years time I want to be...
A megastar.
