Despite their moniker, there’s nothing cultish about Manchester sextet Kult Country. Their music is warm, inviting and definitely a bit moreish.
Their astral indie marries the otherworldy influence of Spiritualized with the driving velocity of The Horrors - and it’s this steady groove that sets them apart from all the reverb-toting 4AD acolytes consistently crowding the blog pages.
New single Trembling Moon, the band’s first release on No Self Records, lavishes waves of throbbing psychedelic backwash across your eardrums, while lead vocalist and KC spiritual masthead Yousif Al-Karaghouli empties the contents of his unconscious. No surprise that MJ from Hookworms was on production duties then…
The release builds on the success of Slowburn, the band’s aptly titled debut single through the excellent Sways Records, the imprint that first brought us likeminded thinkers MONEY and Greatwaves. It will be celebrated by two live shows next month at London’s Seabright Arms and Salford’s The Eagle.
No strangers to the stage, Kult Country come alive amid the unpredictability of the performance space, and have already wowed at Liverpool Psych Fest and held their own on the road with both MONEY and rock veterans Dinosaur Jr.
We spent 30 seconds with the band ahead of the single's release on 30 June to find out what tickles their musical tastebuds…
We first started writing music because…
Getting drunk together in a sweaty room was better than drinking alone.
We have been making music since…
The dawn.
Our music is…
Distorted lullabies.
You'll like us if you listen to...
Waves cascading against the rocks.
Our favourite venue is…
Cruz 101.
Music is important because…
Through the noise, sometimes you need silence.
Our biggest inspiration is…
Robert Thornber.
Our dream collaboration would be…
Mahmoud Ahmed.
To try us out, listen to our song…
Trembling Moon.
If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Dead.
In 10 years’ time we want to be...
Alive, still making music.
