Krept And Konan

Krept and Konan are a youthful duo tapping the best elements of rap, hip, hop, grime, house and pop music to inspire their music. It’s a potent formula which is obviously making the right noises in the right places with the pair recently receiving a nomination for best newcomer at this year’s MOBO Awards. Even more remarkable is how the duo recently dented the top 20 with no label or national radio support. We found out how these two songwriters are doing it for themselves…

Krept and Konan are a youthful music duo who take the best bits of rap, hip hop, grime, house and pop to inspire their music.

It’s a sound which is obviously making the right noises in all the right places after the pair received a nomination for best newcomer at this year’s MOBO Awards.

The pair began making music as a hobby in their South London homes before it became clear that their talent was too big to be contained in their abodes. Instead they struck out and immediately began making waves with a string of high-octane performances and well received mix-tapes.

2010's Tsunami mix sold 2,000 sold copies and an estimated 60,000 illegal downloads while a cover of Jay Z and Kanye West’s Otis did even more to spread the word.

However, it’s their latest Young Kingz mixtape  which shows how all the hard work has paid off. The release made the top twenty of the album charts in its first week, eventually landing above the likes of John Legend and Big Sean.

The mixtape is out now with three videos released via YouTube alongside it - My Story and Don’t Waste My Time (which have gained over 680,000 views and counting) and Too Young featuring fellow Play Dirty associate Yungen.

We managed to catch up with a youthful, energetic pair who are going places fast...

We first started writing music because…
(Krept): Konan has always had music in his household as his parents were musicians. I started writing as a hobby because my friends used to write lyrics and do little tape recordings. I then wanted to do that myself so that’s where I got the influence from.

We have been making music since…
2004.

Our music is…
Very diverse and versatile, you can never predict what kind of track we will do next. Our fans mainly love us for our word play and real, meaningful lyrics.

You'll like us if you listen to...
Rap as a whole. But we cover such a variety of music. You would like us if you like Lil Wayne for his word play, Drake for his melodic sound, Giggs for his real grittiness and Wretch 32 for his lyrical ability.

Our favourite venue is…
O2 as there are so many different mini venues and events that take place inside the dome.

Music is important because…
It helps us get through a lot of situations emotional and physically. It's like our escape route.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Our biggest inspiration to date would probably be Jay Z. The fact that he came from the streets and used the music to make him become such an important figure and businessman

Our dream collaboration would be…
Our dream rap collaboration would be with Drake and a singing collaboration either with Beyonce or Rihanna doing a chorus for us.

To try us out, listen to our song…
To try us out listen our song My Story just so you can get a feel of our music and where we have come from. That song is a really good insight to both of us.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
If we weren't making music we would be probably trying to find out how too!

In 10 years time we want to be...
In 10 years time we want to have achieved a lot of success, platinum selling albums, world tours, set up our own record label and maybe other successful businesses on the side of music.
