Kiran Leonard

Mercurial talent Kiran Leonard creates atmospheric folk-rock that sounds like it’s being transmitted through a sock. Muffled guitars and chanting vocals are often smothered in an all-encompassing electronic grime, while a generous smattering of reverb boosts outdoor recordings to max out the ambience. We caught up with him ahead of the release of his debut album later this summer to find out what makes him tick.

It’s hard to believe that the Mancunian is just 17 years old. His debut album Bowler Hat Soup displays a dizzying array of musical ideas, off-the-wall lyrics and odd sounds, which fight for dominance throughout the set.

Punk, folk, pop and electronica are all invited to the party, as Kiran’s cut-and-paste approach entertains any thread that crops up. This fluidity echoes genre-benders Animal Collective, while his anarchic approach to song structure puts you in mind of Deerhoof or Captain Beefheart.

Restless Kiran plays 22 instruments (including a radiator) on Bowler Hat Soup, and invited guest musicians in to perform bowed strings and horns. We caught up with him ahead of the release of the album later this summer to find out what makes him tick.

I first started writing music because…
I enjoyed playing mandolin but didn't have the attention span to learn the music of other people.

I have been making music since…
I was eight. I started recording at 10, releasing digitally at 12…

My music is…
Loud noises and chords I like.

You'll like me if you listen to...
Van Dyke Parks, Henry Cow, Godspeed! You Black eEmperor, Deerhoof, Pharaoh Sanders, Sufjan Stevens, Frank Zappa, Radiohead, Krzysztof Penderecki, SWANS.

My favourite venue is…
Kraak Gallery, Manchester - nice wall camo.

Music is important because…
Waves, or certain sound waves, can make you feel awesome in the way that, in my opinion, images, objects and words cannot. They literally have a physical effect on your body. It's a constant experience. It's the wind against your window or the Gucci Mane blasting out of your Genelec speakers or the weird tones you hear when you're trying to sleep and you can't hear anything else. It's important whether you like it or not because you can't escape it.

My biggest inspiration is…
Arnold Schwarzenegger.

My dream collaboration would be…
Bill Orcutt on guitar, Billy Sheehan on bass, Zach Hill on drums, Cecil Taylor on keys - though I wouldn't be playing, I'd just watch.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Oakland Highball, because it's only 111 seconds long and there's lots of ideas in it.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
A morphologist.

In 10 years time I want to be...
A morphologist.
