Kaspar Hauser

New Glaswegian trio Kaspar Hauser deal in claustrophobic post-punk that sounds like eighties’ goths Bauhaus if they were produced by Adrian Sherwood. Don't be strangers - they're ace!

Kaspar Hauser is the musical moniker of maverick Scots noiseniks Josh Longton, Anne Kastner and Andy Brown.

Like their wild namesake (an 18th century Bavarian boy who invented a disturbing myth around himself), the trio’s music is unsettling, outre and sometimes grotesque.

Their claustrophobic post-punk sounds like eighties’ goths Bauhaus if they were produced by Adrian Sherwood, and carries all the hallmarks of a band intent on sonic destruction.

Layers on layers of fuzz and scuzz envelop spiky bass riffs, wailing guitars and menacing vocals, while syncopated drum clatter adds to the general chaos.

So far, they’ve got just one release to their name, the eponymous limited edition cassette EP (which was out last month on Soft Power Records) - but their manifesto already appears to be live, direct and fully sentient.

We caught up with the gig-smashing gang ahead of their upcoming live show this Saturday (11 June) at The Old Hairdressers, Glasgow, to learn more about their agit-goth ‘n’ roll…

We first started making music because…
We couldn't find anyone who was making the kind of music we wanted to hear.

We have been making music since…
2015.

Our music is…
All the better if you know your Carry On stars.

You'll like our music if you listen to...
Mark E Smith reading the football results.

Our favourite venue is…
Barrowlands Ballroom

Music is important because…
I can't go back to the call centre.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Avoiding the responsibilities of adult life.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Shirley Bassey feat. Genesis P-Orridge

To try us out, listen to our song…
Pencil Doings.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Dead.

In 10 years’ time we want to be…
‘Hello Wembley!’ No. Alive and still speaking to each other would be a nice start.
