JAWS are not, as you might first expect a bunch of shark lovers.
Instead, alongside the likes of NME darlings Peace and Swim Deep, they are one of Birmingham’s burgeoning musical talents, giving the city a reputation as a breeding ground for brilliantly written guitar music.
The band’s reputation as a blistering live act has created quite the buzz about them since they first appeared in 2012. The group’s way with a melody and a thick layer of guitar fuzz hearkens back to the glory days of shoegazing. Think Ride or the Jesus and Mary Chain with plenty of soaring melodies aplenty and songwriting nuances which belie their young years and you’re close to pinpointing their sound.
The group's hard work across last year’s festival circuit plus an ace series of EPs including July’s top Gold single has done the band proud, especially after recently being announced as the winner of the first Momentum Deezer Award of £2,500.
The award is part of the Momentum Music Fund, an initiative run by the PRS for Music Foundation with Arts Council England in association with Deezer. The scheme offers upcoming acts grants of £5,000-£15,000 to further their musical career. Catch the band on tour this April and May…
We first started writing music because…
We were bored.
We have been making music since…
I have been in bands since i was about 13 so seven or eight years now.
Our music is…
Alright.
You'll like our music if you listen to…
The Cure.
Our favourite venue is…
I love the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton although we've never played there.
Music is important because…
It's a universal language which talks to everyone.
Our biggest inspiration is…
Not so much an inspiration, but seeing other local bands do so well definitely gives me a drive to do more.
Our dream collaboration would be…
Probably Nile Rodgers.
To try us out, listen to our song…
Gold.
If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Asleep, or probably involved with someone on the Jeremy Kyle show.
In 10 years time we want to be…
Cool.
What does winning the Momentum backing mean to you?
A lot, it's allowed us to bring out an album that we're really happy with!
