Born in 2002, The Irrespressibles are exactly that – an extravagant art-pop orchestra led by composer Jamie McDermott.
The group wear their hearts on their musical sleeves via a theatrical, ambitious pop sound. After initially spending time gathering experiences and going through numerous line up changes, the band have recently focused on their recorded output - they've put out numerous EPs, released debut album Mirror Mirror as well as the much acclaimed second LP Nude in 2012.
Self-produced by Jamie McDermott, this latter work is a grand statement of intent, combining electronics with classical flourishes to huge effect. Described by The Independent as ‘an act of bravery in a cowardly world', it lead the band taking their live spectacle across the world. The tour included a performance of their sexually charged sounds at a free concert Gorky Park in Moscow in front of 5,000 people where the band showcased videos from their forthcoming Nude EP trilogy.
The Irrepressibles are now expanding on the album through an three EPs showcasing an ever expanding musical palette. Outside their own releases, the band have attracted a glittering cast of remixers including Iamamiwhoami, Röyksopp, Hercules and Love Affair and Zero 7 while Jamie has also lent his vocal talents to Rokysopp and Rex the Dog. It's a good indicator of the musical barometers they work between. You can get to know him and his music in our 30 seconds interview below…
We first started writing music because…
I wanted to express the beauty of homosexuality and I could always hear and create music in my head since I was a child. I can't help but create music.
We have been making music since…
I was about three with pots and pans, then it was a casio keyboard I think, an performance orchestra, synths and now a rock band. But I started The Irrepressibles in 2002, I wanted to do something different with pop music so I started working with orchestral instruments and fusing them with my passion for grunge, punk, art, and electronic music.
Our music is…
Full of emotion and honesty.
You'll like our music if you listen to...
What you like without being into one genre.
Our favourite venue is…
A forest.
Music is important because…
It expresses what we can't express in words alone.
Our biggest inspiration is…
The world of now.
Our dream collaboration would be…
To work with Aphex Twin.
To try us out, listen to my song…
Not Mine from our most recent EP Nude:Viscera.
If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Building sets, creating videos, dancing with no clothes on.
In 10 years time we want to be...
Building our own instruments to create new music.
