Guitar toting rock and roll bands are ten penny but how many really mean it?
London’s IC1s have been forcing music lovers to realise that they DO and 'they' still make ‘em like they used to. Their music is as brash as it is bold and has won them a devoted army of admirers since they first got their songs together.
It’s been a roller coaster ride for the band after they released debut single Levitate. It saw them scale the upper echelons of the iTunes Alternative Singles Chart while the band’s powerful noise caught the ears of former Libertines drummer Gary Powell. He loved them so much, he saw fit to release their music on his 25 Hour Convenience Store record label.
This year the band have upped the ante with the release of Growing Up, Going Down, a tune which packs a powerful musical punch. They followed it with the more reflective, Beautiful Ugly in October. Both releases gained them plaudits from Creation mogul Alan McGee and Artrocker while they’ve also recently toured with Frankie and the Heartstrings and The Family Rain.
We spend 30 Seconds with IC1s as they gear up to release a debut album Lowering the Tone in 2014. Recorded with producer Barny Barnicott (Arctic Monkeys, Editors, Kasabian), it's got them ear marked as ones to keep your eyes on...
We first started writing music because…
Dan: I don't really know to be honest, I suppose because I wanted to be IN Oasis.
We have been making music since…
Jesse: Birth. We all played in proper unsuccessful bedroom bands before but fancied giving a proper band a shot.
Our music is…
Andy: A form of escapism for us. It also fills the void between our awkard silences and even more awkard interview skills.
You'll like our music if you listen to...
Jesse: Decent music. Not all that generic and pointless shit that is filling up the charts. Xfactor, The Voice, Glee ... it's all bollocks.
Our favourite venue is…
Andy: Lexington, Kings Cross. It's an awesome little venue with an equally as awesome burger menu.
Music is important because…
Leon: Because I'd be a religious nutcase otherwise.
Our biggest inspiration is…
Dan: I take inspiration from looking in the mirror to be honest. I find my handsome dashing looks get me through the day and if I'm honest, I think it helps other people through their days too. Other than that, the Beatles.
Our dream collaboration would be…
Dan: I'd like to record an album with Phil Spector....
To try us out, listen to our song…
Jesse: I couldn't pick one and say “listen to that one". They are all different and great. So listen to all of them.
If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Dan: Virgins!
In 10 years time we want to be...
Dan: Retired, loaded and in the sun.
