Hyde and Beast is a collaborative project between two northern drummers - Dave Hyde of The Futureheads and Neil Bassett, formerly of The Golden Virgins.

They may have both made their names brandishing sticks but you need to leave your drummer jokes at the door. The duo have picked up some natty songwriting skills along the way, seemingly taking their tips from the sun drenched, psychedelic solo work of George Harrison or Steely Dan if new album Keep Moving is anything to go by.

The records arrives three years after their debut Slow Down but they’ve spent the intervening years honing their sound - this new release is full of rootsy, classy pop moments marrying the best bits of seventies glam with brass-filled harmonies. It’s far more west coast US than north east of the UK and perfect for hitting the road at the tail end of summer with Open Your Heart and Blown Away particular moments on the album.

Meet them in our 30 seconds below and click here to find out how to catch them on tour this autumn…

We first started writing music because…
We were just clowning around, blowing off steam and avoiding the pub.

We have been making music since…
Our first album came out in 2011 so I guess we started making music in 2010. But prior to this Dave had been drumming with Futureheads since 1999. I've been around the block a few times too.

Our music is…
Joyous, heartbreaking, clattering, horn drenched. Like a car full of clowns crashing gently.

You'll like our music if you listen to...
Harry Nilsson, The Band, T-Rex are the names that keep popping up in reviews.

Our favourite venue is…
We love The Deaf Institute in Manchester and The Cluny 2 in Newcastle. Great intimate venues. We've had some great shows at both.

Music is important because…
You'd look stupid dancing to silence! But it can also make you cry. Gotta keep those eyes flushed out.

Our biggest inspiration is…
The Bugsy Malone soundtrack. Fabulous.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Dr John and Gruff Rhys. Together. At last!

To try us out, listen to our song…
Open your heart from our new album Keep Moving.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Dave would likely be a zookeeper. I'd be a monkey and I'd throw peanuts at him.

In 10 years time we want to be...
Fat, drunk and happy.
