Fuzz-filled, sun dappled guitar pop is a domain Hooton Tennis Club’s are ruling so far in 2015.
The four piece first got together on the Wirral, bonding over a love for the harmonies and feedback heavy guitar pop of Big Star, Sonic Youth and the Silver Jews. They were soon snapped up by the Farm's bass player Carl Hunter and his DIY record label before signing a deal with Jeff Barrett’s Heavenly Recordings after a key gig at Liverpool’s Sound City.
The group have since been working with the Coral’s Bill Ryder Jones and perfecting the first fruits of their labour, debut single Jasper. It’s a prime slice of fuzzy, grunge pop and has been all over more discerning radio station’s since the start of the year. Look out for more exciting music from these talented chaps across the year …
We first started writing music because…
In high school we were painfully good friends that happened to play complimentary instruments, so starting a band was always bound to happen.
We have been making music since…
Late 2013 as Hooton Tennis Club, but we've all been involved in a variety of musical projects since 2005 (... when Harry first taught the other three how to play Wild Thing on the guitar; A-D-E-D).
Our music is…
Semi-slack, fuzzy pop.
You'll like our music if you listen to...
Big Star, Supergrass, Beat Happening, Pappy's Flatshare Slamdown, The Beach Boys, Nas, The Black Lips, Sonic Youth, Stewart Lee, Tom Waits, Parliament, A Tribe Called Quest, Josie Long, The Beatles, Jaguar Skills, Dinosaur Jr., Beck, Silver Jews, The West Wing, et al.
Our favourite venue is…
The Kazimier, Liverpool.
Music is important because…
It makes cooking less tedious.
Our biggest inspiration is…
Currently Marc Maron.
Our dream collaboration would be…
Something along the lines of the collaborations that happened between alternative comedians and bands/musicians in the late eighties and early nineties. Playing shows alongside some of our favourite comedy acts would be amazing!
To try us out, listen to my song…
Jasper. Watch our ‘charmingly lo-fi!’ home-made video below…
If we weren't making music we’d be…
We have just sat around for a good couple of hours discussing this question over pizza. We talked about possible realistic occupations and laughed over recreational lifestyles of leisure, but we came to no clear conclusions. There are a boat-load of other things that we could try out ... but making music is great.
In 10 years time we want to be...
Arguing over the title of our tenth album.
