Reading like a who’s who of leftfield pop and alt-rock, the talent on Division Street promises to lend some weight to Simon’s delicate knack for creating gentle melodies and gossamer folk.
Simon co-produced the album with Tom Rothrock, who also produced three albums for Elliott Smith and Beck’s first album Mellow Gold, among others. It was recorded with Pete Thomas from Elvis Costello’s Attractions on drums, bassist Nikolai Fraiture from The Strokes, vocals by Inara George, Feist’s musical director Brian LeBarton on keys, plus Nate Walcott from Bright Eyes and Wilco’s Mikael Jorgensen.
You can get a first taste of the album in the shape of Bonnie Brae - a free download available from Harper Simon's Facebook page or his website. The album is out 25 March through PIAS.
We caught up with Simon, son of legendary songer-songwriter Paul Simon, to find out more…
I first started writing music because…
I wanted to be cool like The Clash. And there was a lot of it around my house.
I have been making music since…
I was about eleven.
My music is…
Black and Blue.
You'll like me if you listen to...
Magazines that tell you what to like.
My favourite venue is…
The Carnegie Deli at 55th street. I also like the frogs' legs at Mr. Chow's.
Music is important because…
It saves you when you're young.
My biggest inspiration is…
Women. Women and nature. And people who were born funny.
My dream collaboration would be…
A co-write with Lou Reed. Or to write a song for Elvis.
To try me out, listen to my song…
Bonnie Brae. You can get it off my website.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Sitting in a diner answering interview questions on my laptop.
In 10 years time I want to be...
Satisfied with my work.
