Nottingham singer songwriter Harleighblu has been steeped in soul music since first falling in love with her mum’s record collection.
This 21 year old references classic artists such as Nina Simone and Lauryn Hill while she’s blessed with a voice which could stop traffic. Her sound straddles the cross roads between hip hop, soul and funk while her voice is smoky and classic.
Signed to Brighton’s Tru Thoughts when still in her teens, Harleighblu was linked up with producer Joe Buhdha on last year’s debut LP Forget Me Not. The resulting collection of fresh-faced beats and stunning vocals, including Enough Now and Play Me, has endeared her to anyone whose ears have been touched by her songs.
The likes of 1xtra’s Mistajam and BBC 6 Music’s Don Letts are fans while she’s also a great live act, winning over crowds with memorable sets at this year’s Great Escape and Glastonbury Festivals. If you’re after the latest neo soul sensation, then look no further…
I first started writing music because…
It was therapeutic for me, a way of venting my emotions.
I have been making music since…
I was about seven, down the community recording studio in Notts with the hip hop boys. Those were the days!
My music is…
Electronic, hip hop, soul.
You'll like my music if you listen to...
D'Angelo, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Eryka Badu, Little Dragon...
My favourite venue is…
Any venue with a good sound system and good monitors!
Music is important because…
As Bob Marley would say ‘when it hits ya, ya feel no pain’.
My biggest inspiration is…
Life, people, experiences.
My dream collaboration would be…
To collaborate with Bilal... He's insane!
To try me out, listen to my song…
Play Me.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
An ambassador for dreadlocks.
In 10 years time I want to be...
Playing all over the world and creating music that still sounds good ten years after that!
